MATIENZO CAVES PROJECT
Viewing pdf documents

All of the scanned logbooks and many other documents with information about the caves explored by the MCP are available in pdf format.

Until early 2023, these pdfs could be viewed as a "flip book" on the Issuu website. Apart from the mildly obstrusive adverts, Issuu could not only deal with A4 booklets but also documents with pull-outs, eg landscape A3 within an A4 booklet. However, Issuu was going to charge for many of the pdfs stored on that platform. After extensive research, all other flip book platforms appear to charge for any extensive use or have limited capabilities.

From now, all the pdfs (currently about 350) are stored and available from the MCP server. Hopefully, all the links across all the web pages have been altered to reflect the changed addresses.

Although there is no necessity for using it, standard pdfs can be nicely viewed using a flip book extension in the Chrome browser (Pageflip PDF viewer). Pages can be flipped by clicking the page edge, by clicking the left or right screen icon, or by using the keyboard arrow keys. A menu bar across the bottom allows a view of page thumbnails, zoom in and out and other choices. The Microsoft Edge flip book viewer is less capable. (Or the document can be downloaded to view.)

Some viewing functionality has been lost: any documents with "pull-outs" or where page 1 is a different size to the remaining document are clipped. However, each document can be downloaded and viewed as a complete flat pdf in, for example, Foxit PDF Reader. Or an alternative simple pdf reader extension can be installed (and the Pageflip extension turned off) to read the different size pages.

The range of many documents available can be seen in the bibliography / webography.
